Apple iPads have always been the leader of the tablet segment. They are known for their great software environment, which the competition often struggles to match. This year, along with the iPhone 13 lineup, Apple has also updated its new entry-level iPad. This 9th generation model comes with one of Apple’s most powerful processors. It claims to be a solid device for users looking for the right balance of features and affordability.
The 9th generation iPad runs Apple’s A13 Bionic processor, first introduced with the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro in 2019. Apple says the new CPU is way faster than the last generation’s iPad’s A12 chip. It offers 20 per cent more GPU performance and it has a powerful Neural Engine for machine-learning apps. Apple says the A13 can effortlessly handle current games and apps and even future iOS updates without any problems.
The iPad 9th generation runs iPadOS 15, just like its expensive siblings. It gives you access to exclusive iPadOS features such as Split View that lets you multi-task between apps. It also lets you drag and drop content between apps with touch. You get access to other interesting features such as Quick Note, Live Text and Universal Control that enhances the overall experience.
The 9th generation iPad is also a solid compact machine for creators. It can effortlessly run apps like Adobe Photoshop, iMovie, ProCreate and more. It supports the 2nd generation Apple Pencil that gives you better control over these tools.
The iPad 9 supports a keyboard and mouse, allowing you to use the device like a computer. The device also has a Smart Connector, that works with the Apple Smart Keyboard. The iPad now starts as a 64GB storage model and a 256GB storage option is available for users who want to store all their media files on their iPad.
The iPad 9th generation look like its predecessor, and we have no complaints about it. It is a classic with an aluminium body that is sleeker and smaller than the iPad Air and Pro models. It is also environment-friendly as made of 100 per cent recycled aluminium. The device is available in two colours – Space Grey and Silver. There is a Touch ID button at the bottom for unlocking the device and downloading apps. The device has Apple’s Lightning port for charging the device and data transfer. There is also a headphone jack.
The new iPad runs a 10.2-inch Retina Display that runs a screen resolution of 2,160 x 1,620. Apple says the display produces over 3.5 billion colours and 500 nits of brightness. The bigger and brighter screen renders a solid content watching experience even in a brightly lit room. The screen’s 4:3 aspect ratio also gives you an edge while playing online competitive games such as Battlegrounds India and Call of Duty: Mobile.
Apple has also introduced its True Tone technology in its entry-level iPad. It uses an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts colour tones to the surroundings. Apple says True Tone on the new iPad 9 makes images appear more natural and provides users with a more comfortable viewing experience in all lighting environments.
Online schooling and remote working have raised the importance of cameras on tablets, and Apple understands this. The iPad 9 now comes with a new 12MP ultra-wide, front-facing camera with a 122-degrees field-of-view and f/2.4 aperture. This is a big update over last year’s 1.2-megapixel FaceTime camera. It supports Apple’s Center Stage feature, which was previously exclusive only to iPad Pro models. It keeps the subject in the frame so you can have a better video calling experience. There is an 8MP camera at the rear, good enough for scanning documents. The device has dual microphones for calls, video and audio recording.
The new iPad has Wi-Fi 802.11ac for wireless connectivity. The higher-end models have LTE support, giving you access to the internet even when you are travelling. In terms of battery, the iPad is equipped with a 32.4 watt-hour battery. Apple claims it delivers up to 10 hours of video watching time.
The 9th generation iPad brings significant improvements over its predecessor. Its new CPU runs all apps smoothly, while the updated camera enhances the video calling experience. The biggest appeal of the new device is obviously its affordable price. The entry-level model is priced at Rs. 30,990*, making it a solid value-for-money tablet.
