September isn’t any other month, it’s beginning of a new iPhone. Apple enthusiasts eagerly await this event, and this year, there is a lot on their plate. Apple just announced its new high-end flagship smartphones, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, alongside the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. While the standard models bring some notable design changes, the Pro versions boast an entirely new camera system. Here is everything you need to know about these new devices.

Both the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro come with 6.1-inch screens, making them the compact contenders in the game. A 6.7-inch screen is available on the Plus and Pro Max models for those who prefer larger phones. The Pro models now feature an entirely titanium frame which replaces the stainless steel from previous models. Apple says this makes the phone more durable as well as less prone to fingerprints. These phones come in Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium, and Natural Titanium colours.

The standard iPhone 15 models continue to offer the familiar aluminium frame which is lightweight and sturdy. However, these phones no longer have glossy finishes. Apple has now opted for a matte finish like the Pro models giving them a smooth feel that is also less susceptible to fingerprints and smudges. There are five colours available on these phones – black, blue, green, yellow, and pink.

The newest design change on the Pro models is the Action button, which can be customised to do many things. By default, it acts like a mute and unmute key as before. However, you can even use it to launch the camera or any other app with the Shortcuts app. Both the standard 15 and 15 Pro models now feature USB-C ports, a change from the Lightning port Apple has used for years. All devices also come with an IP68 rating, so they are resistant to water and dust.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Pro models offer Apple’s Super Retina XDR OLED display. They all support features like HDR and Apple True Tone technology which ensures natural picture quality. However, the Pro models have the ProMotion technology that sets them apart. These phones offer 120Hz refresh rates, making the UI, as well as gaming a lot smoother. The Pro models also support Always-on display so you can peek at notifications without unlocking the device.

All phones now have Apple’s Dynamic Island feature and shrunken bezels, giving them a premium look. The screens also come with a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, which prevents smudges. Apple says the new iPhone 15 series now supports 2,000 nits peak brightness. This means you can easily read and watch content even in bright outdoor conditions.

The iPhone 15 series also brings performance improvements. The Pro models now house the all-new Apple A17 Bionic chipset with a 6-core GPU and hardware-accelerated ray tracking. Apple claims this results in a 20 per cent increase in performance, allowing users to play games more smoothly. This 3nm CPU is not just fast, it also offers improved efficiency and better battery performance.

The standard iPhone 15 is powered by the A16 Bionic chipset. This is also a strong chipset and can run all apps and games smoothly. While Apple does not disclose the memory capacity, but the Pro models are said to have 8GB of RAM while the standard variants come with 6GB of RAM. You can choose a Pro model in a 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB configuration. The standard iPhone 15 starts with 128 GB of storage and the top variant has 1 TB of storage.

Both the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro models are 5G-enabled devices with additional e-SIM support. The Pro model has Wi-Fi 6E while the standard variant comes with Wi-Fi 6. The Type-C port on the Pro model offers USB 3 transfer speeds of up to 10 Gbps, while the standard 15 models offer USB 2 speeds of 0.5 Gbps.

Apple has also made big improvements in the camera department. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus come with an upgraded 48 MP primary camera with an f/1.6 aperture. The Pro and Pro Max models also have a 48 MP camera, but it has an f/1.78 aperture. All models have OIS and support for super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). These devices come with a 12MP ultra-wide angle camera offering a 120-degree field of view.

Despite the lack of a telephoto lens, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have 2x optical zoom. Both Pro models come with a dedicated 12MP telephoto lens. However, the Pro offers 3X optical zoom, while the Pro Max has 5X optical zoom. These models also support ProRes 4K video recording at 60 fps. For selfies, the iPhone 15 series equips the same 12 MP camera, so performance will be similar across all devices.

The iPhone 15 series brings major improvements over last year’s models. The standard model looks way more premium and comes with a pro-grade camera without the price of one. The Pro models on the other hand receive a huge performance bump. They are faster, come in new colour schemes, and justify their Pro tags with their enhanced cameras.
